Gunjan Aylawadi is a visual designer being specialized in paper weaving. She was born in India and she graduated as an industrial designer. She is a self taught artist and at the moment she is working in Sydnay, Australia. Gunjan Ayalawadi patterns are so eye-catching!!!
Her work, mainly, focuses between the mind sensory pleasures, exploration of memory and materials. Her main inspiration is the repetitive geometric patterns and relief in arabesque architecture and art that she was seeing around India as she was growing up. Who does not love these arabesque details and patterns!!! The visuals and the tactile handmade objects from her memories are filtered in contemporary aesthetics.
She got her bachelor of Computer Science in MD University in India and her Product Design degree at Emmore Design Center at Sydney. The knowledge from her Product Design studies affected her work as it is textural and distinct. Her creations are made by paper weaving where the tension in curled paper makes her work to extent in 3 dimensions. “You will see textural bands of deep contrasting colours that represent a remembrance of the rituals, ceremonies, smells experienced in a specific place or moment in time.” She created a unique technique for her designs because likes to touch and feel her medium.
She participated in many exhibitions and art events like the Paper Art Biennale in Netherlands 2015 and Sydney Contemporary 2015. Also, some of her projects have been finalist for several art awards at the Woollahara Small Sculpture Prize 2014 and the Alice Springs Art Prize 2014.
